• The first half of this course will cover the fundamentals of leadership and communication as you prepare for your Senior Project. The approach of the class is threefold. First, the course is designed to give you an understanding and appeciation of leadership and communication. Secondly, the course uses the teachings of the NewChurch as a portal through which we can examine various facets of leadership and commuication traits and practices. Thirdly, the course places an emphasis on critical thinking, teamwork and writing.

    You can expect the following:

    • Students will be responsibe for the material in the “textbook.”
    • Class time will be used to discuss, evaluate and analyze the materal from the “text” – class will not be a regurgitation of facts.
    • Writing will be an integral part of this class. Students will be expected to convey their thoughts and ideas clearly through in-class writing assignments, essays, and papers.
    • Be prepared to speak publically (formally and informally).
    • Define your purpose, take on the challenge and look for the strech.

We are fourunate in that this course is partially endowed by Mr. Garth Pitcairn and his family. Before Mr. Pitcairn passed away, he voiced that he wanted a course taught to secondary students that focused on two goals:

      1. Be the best person you can be.
      2. Be the best NewChurch person you can be.

It is my hope that you walk away from this class with more than factual knowledge; this course will provide you with opportunities to make opportunities for yourself.
